Frequently asked questions
- What is image to text conversion?
- Image to text conversion (OCR — optical character recognition) is the process of reading printed or typed characters inside a photograph, screenshot or scan and turning them into editable, searchable plain text.
- How does the conversion process work here?
- This tool uses Tesseract 5, an open-source OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly. When you drop an image, the browser decodes it, scales it for optimal recognition, and feeds it through the engine. The output is editable text with a confidence score — no server round-trip involved.
- Is image to text conversion free on this site?
- Yes, completely free with no limits. There is no signup, no watermark, no daily cap and no premium tier. Because the conversion runs in your browser, there are no server costs to pass on.
- Which image formats are supported for conversion?
- JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, up to 25 MB each. That covers phone photos, screenshots, scanned documents and exports from virtually any application.
- Can I run batch conversion on multiple images?
- Yes. Add up to 20 images at once. They are converted one by one, and you can copy or download all results together when the batch finishes.
- Does the conversion work without an internet connection?
- Yes. After the OCR engine (~3 MB) and your chosen language pack (0.5–4 MB) load once, they are cached in the browser. You can then run conversions offline.
- Are my images sent anywhere during conversion?
- No. The entire conversion happens locally in your browser. No image data is transmitted, stored or logged. Closing the tab releases everything from memory.
- How many languages does the conversion support?
- 30 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Turkish and Hebrew.
How the conversion works
When you drop an image on this page, the browser decodes it, scales it into the resolution range the OCR model was trained on, and feeds it to Tesseract 5 — the established open-source recognition engine, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs at near-native speed inside a browser tab.
The engine identifies lines, words and characters, then returns plain text plus a confidence score for each image. Results land in editable boxes so you can fix any misread character before copying or downloading.
The first conversion takes a few extra seconds while the engine (~3 MB) and the chosen language pack (0.5–4 MB) download. Both are cached in your browser, so every subsequent image converts right away — even offline.
Need a different starting point? Image to Text is the same engine with the same features. You can also extract text from an image or use the image to text converter.
Your images stay private
The entire conversion runs on your device. No image is transmitted, stored or logged — the only downloads are the OCR engine and the language pack you selected. Closing the tab releases all in-memory copies.
