How to extract text from an image

Three steps to pull text out of any image — no account needed, no software to install.

  1. Drop or paste your image

Drag a photo, screenshot or scan onto the drop zone, click it to browse your files, or press ⌘V / Ctrl+V to paste from your clipboard. You can add up to 20 images at once.

  2. Choose the text language

Select the language the text is written in — English is the default, and 30 are available. The right language improves accuracy for non-Latin scripts like Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

  3. Copy or download the extracted text

Each result appears in an editable box with a confidence score. Hit Copy text for the clipboard, Download .txt for a file, or Download all to grab every result at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from an image?
Drop the image onto this page, choose the language of the text, and the extracted text appears under the thumbnail within seconds. You can then copy it to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file.
Can I extract text from a screenshot?
Yes. Take a screenshot, then press ⌘V (Mac) or Ctrl+V (Windows/Linux) anywhere on this page. The pasted image is processed the same way as an uploaded file.
Does this tool extract text from handwritten images?
The OCR engine is trained on printed and typed text, so it handles handwriting poorly. Neat block letters sometimes come through, but cursive is unreliable. Treat handwritten results as a rough starting point.
What image formats are supported for text extraction?
JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, up to 25 MB each. That covers phone photos, screenshots, scanned documents and images from almost any application.
Is the extracted text accurate?
Clean printed text at a reasonable resolution typically returns 90%+ confidence. Accuracy drops on blurry images, decorative fonts, tight line spacing and text over busy backgrounds. Each result shows its own confidence score so you know where to double-check.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The OCR engine runs entirely in your browser — no image data is transmitted, stored or logged. Closing the tab releases everything from memory.
Can I extract text from multiple images at once?
Yes. You can add up to 20 images in a single batch. They are processed one after another, and you can copy or download all results together.
Which languages can this tool extract text in?
30 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Turkish and Hebrew.

How text extraction works

When you drop an image on this page, the browser decodes it, scales it into the resolution range the OCR model was trained on, and feeds it to Tesseract 5 — the established open-source recognition engine, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs at near-native speed inside a browser tab.

The engine identifies lines, words and characters, then returns plain text plus a confidence score for each image. Results land in editable boxes so you can fix any misread character before copying or downloading.

The first extraction takes a few extra seconds while the engine (~3 MB) and the chosen language pack (0.5–4 MB) download. Both are cached in your browser, so every subsequent image starts processing immediately.

Your images stay private

Text extraction runs entirely on your device. No image is transmitted, stored or logged — the only downloads are the OCR engine and the language pack you selected. Closing the tab releases all in-memory copies.
